Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur is an ancient Newar town in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley. It is the third largest city in Kathmandu and was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century. Bhaktapur is famous for special type of curd, It is experienced by the curd makers that the taste of curd prepared in this location cannot be found elsewhere all over Nepal. Beside the curd and the wonderful temples there is also a clay pottery tradition that is still carried today and practiced in the city. Visitors can watch the creation and are welcomed to take part in it. There is also a very old paper factory that opens its doors to whoever wishes to observe the different stages of traditional papermaking.
Bhaktapur is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its rich culture, temples, and wood, metal and stone artwork.
For bikers: Bhaktapur is 15 kilometers away from the tourist area of Thamel. This visit can be easily combined with either Nagarkot, Dhulikhel and Namo Buddha.
