High Altitude Motor Tours
This tour is the most challenging of all. Some of our tours, Kodari or Dunche for instance reach elevations of 2300 and 2030 meters, respectively. Muktinath Valley rests at an altitude of 3710 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Annapurna circuit trekking. Understandably the road isn’t paved which implies a rough drive. During the monsoon season it can be closed for months due to landslides. You will need to acquire the Annapurna Conservation Area ticket to get permission to access it.
Muktinath is a sacred place both for Hindus and Buddhists. The Tibetan Buddhist tradition states that Guru Rinpoche meditated at Muktinath on his way to Tibet. The waterway downstream from Muktinath along Kali Gandaki is the source of all Silas (usually black-coloured fossil found in the sacred river) that are required to establish a temple of Vishnu anywhere in the world.
For bikers: The trip starts from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From there we head to Beni where the rougher stretch starts. At Jomsom you enter the district of Mustang. After that you pass the village of Marpha, famous for its apples, where apple brandy is made. Worth a stop. This tour is our longest in time and requires more preparation. Between May and September the road is inaccessible to visit Muktinath due to monsoon rains.
